Jan wallander decentralisation

A decision was made to extensively decentralise Handelsbanken’s organisation. Jan Wallander was born in 1920. After his doctors degree in economics he worked as a scientist and became associate professor at the University of Stockholm. He left the university career in 1960 when he became managing director of Sundsvallsbanken, a provincial bank in the northern part of Sweden. Jan Wallander did lots of things differently – probably the greatest being that he was also a firm believer in empowering people through decentralisation. There is a clear relationship between decentralisation 2 – empowerment – intrinsic motivation – purpose – systemic collaboration – continuous improvement – profit sharing. Over in the banking world, major Swedish lender Handelsbanken successfully shifted to a decentralized model back in the 1970s under its then-CEO – and celebrated decentralization proponent – Jan Wallander.
